When it comes to “motivational speaking”, I’m bit of a skeptic. So, imagine my surprise when I found that regularly watching motivational videos had a significant influence on my life. There’s nothing scientific relating to this experiment. It’s the definition of anecdotal. It’s my own singular experience, placed in the context of an extremely busy lifestyle. I can’t guarantee that the outcome of the videos which i describe to you below will have a similar impact on your daily life. I can only testify to how my own life has changed after adopting that one daily habit.
Each morning, in my drive into work, I might launch random motivational video #1 and tune in to it during my forty-minute drive. The motivational videos were typically 5 to 7 minutes each. The valuable lesson through the lives of achievers is that they chip away at their mental blocks more consistently than the others. Ten TED Talks underscore one easy thing – it’s all in the mind.
Next, during lunchtime, I might slip on some headphones and listen to another random 5-minute motivational video #2. Finally, on my drive home at the end of the day, I would randomly select motivational video #3. At the start, I discovered the schedule difficult to keep. I’m normally an extremely busy and driven person because it is, so remembering to listen or watch another video wasn’t always easy. However, in just the first days, I began noticing some quite interesting, almost unnerving, changes in myself.
How can you feel about motivational videos? You may think that they’re nothing but glorified, digital pep rallies where overly optimistic people preach empty words of success, victory, and ultimately happiness. One thing that I never might have expected relating to this experience was not the truth that the motivational videos did actually produce more energy and more drive on a daily basis – that’s predictable. What wasn’t predictable was that accomplishing this experiment would change the entire focus of my life.

Because I paid attention to all the speakers within these videos, I began exploring at my entire life a little bit more – on the issues i took without any consideration; on the habits I’d formed for comfort instead of my dreams; and at the options I needed made for the wrong reasons.
It was throughout a long hike some day (with a motivational video playing inside my headset) when the realization finally hit me. Up until that day, I’d been making choices according to what everybody else might think of me. I decided engineering rather than writing, because our kids convinced me that concentrating on money first would let me concentrate on my dreams later. I chose a long term goal of management at my job, rather than a long lasting goal that will cause me to truly happy. Then the next questions to ponder emerged, through these sessions of hearing motivational videos:
What things do you want to be remembered for? Should you knew you weren’t going to be here tomorrow, are you making choices and going to a job you hate just because you’re fearful of what might happen later should you pursue your dreams today? I’d been working my entire life – working more hours a day than most people – only to survive; to escape debt, to help keep my head above mounting medical bills, to give our family an improved life, and to hopefully leave something to my children when I’m gone.
There is one motivational quote from Les Brown that struck me like a lot of bricks – it’s something which I’ll always remember: “The graveyard will be the richest put on earth, because it is here that you will discover all of the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books which were never written, the songs which were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to consider that starting point, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.” So, which had been as soon as of realization. But did it materialize into anything real?

The Things I realized was rather shocking – I ended up being deleting the majority of my past so-called “dreams”. Why was I so dedicated to making more money, after learning throughout my entire life that earning more money has never been enough – that I always needed more? As opposed to surviving, my new focus – and my new daily goals and also to-do lists – will be focused not on surviving, but on thriving; being happy today, because we’re not sure to have tomorrow. Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow. Today is all you truly have – right now, this moment, is exactly what you have to work together with. So, every moment needs to be your very best; not lived in anxiety about a potential with insufficient, but lived with all the belief that should you everything you love today, tomorrow your lifestyle will likely be greater than you imagined possible.
